Medical word of the day: avulse, avulsion

As a writer and perhaps aspiring author, I love great action words. This one has particularly violent tones which made me hope that I never have to use it in a sentence about me or anyone I know.

avulse: to tear off forcibly, as when a tooth is lost in an accident.
avulsion: the forcible tearing away of a body part by trauma or surgery (as when a surgeon must remove a nail from the nail bed).
